You’ve been working away, decide to pop your laptop on the floor for a break, take a nap and forget all about it. Next thing you know, you’re awake and need to get up. So you take a step out of bed and… ‘CRACK’, you only went and stood on your laptop, well f*ck. Now your cracked laptop won’t close properly and the screen doesn’t fit in place either. It’s so easily done, but an absolute nightmare nonetheless.
One of our customers brought in an Acer laptop which had a cracked back panel, leaving them needing a quick fix to get back up and running. Luckily, he had purchased an almost identical laptop in a different colour from eBay for spares or repairs, which we used to mend it. Swapping out the black, smashed plastic back panel for the blue replacement, we created a cool, two-tone laptop which works just like before.
How To Prevent A Laptop From Cracking?
The obvious answer here is, don’t put your laptop on the floor or stand on it, but over time, wear and tear can cause laptops to deteriorate. However, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent this from happening.
Get A Case
A padded laptop case is always a worthy investment to help keep your device safe. Alternatively, a hard-shelled case can work wonders too in protecting your laptop from both dust and damage whilst not in use and during transportation.
Carry It Carefully
When carrying your laptop, always, and we mean ALWAYS carry it by the base. Never pick it up by the screen as this puts unnecessary pressure on the hinges and will eventually cause the plastic to crack. Also ensure to not pick your laptop up with your thumb on the screen as it’s incredibly delicate and can break easily.
Check Your Surroundings
It’s so easy to just place your laptop down without thinking about it, only to regret it later when you or your pet knocks something heavy off of a table or shelf, landing straight on top of it. When putting your laptop down, make sure that there are no heavy objects nearby which have a chance of causing damage.
How Do You Fix A Cracked Laptop Back Panel?
First of all, you’ll need a replacement back panel. Getting one second hand from somewhere like eBay like our customer did is your cheapest option, then it’s time to get to work. First, you need to remove the back panel and hinges from both the original laptop and the one you’re replacing it with. Next, it’s a case of fitting the new parts to your laptop, which can be a bit tricky. We won’t go into detail here, as every device is different and it’s not really something we can guide you through in a blog post, but we can still help…
Of course, if you’re unsure on exactly how to do it yourself, we definitely wouldn’t recommend even starting to do it as you can cause more damage otherwise, leaving you without a laptop at all. Instead, bring it in to us here and our professional tech wizards will replace the broken back panel for you. Our offices are just down the hill from Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, so simply drop it off and we will do the rest. If you can’t source your own replacement, don’t worry, we will do it for you.
